Empowering Students Beyond the Classroom
- December 1, 2021
- By Karen Pittman
Science clearly tells us that learning happens everywhere, and all learning is social and emotional. But we rely on schools and teachers as the primary input to learning and development. Urban Assembly is a thriving charter school network in New York City that works with its own schools and schools across the country to actualize a focus on social and emotional learning and deep engagement with partners. Through this, they have a proven formula to upend the inequities that limit students’ success. Each school is paired with partners who integrate students into real life work experiences that test and reward their social, emotional and academic skills during the school day.
In this Episode, host Karen Pittman continues her ongoing conversation with David Adams, CEO of Urban Assembly, bringing in Gizzelle Gonzales, a senior at the Urban Assembly School for Collaborative Health Care. Together, they explore the importance of providing students with multiple avenues for meaning making, highlight the importance of training and activating all of the adults in school and community placement settings, and identify whether or not it is possible to fully integrate academic, social, and emotional development and career readiness.
This episode builds from Karen & David’s May conversation – From Our Schools to All Schools.
