Afterschool and Libraries – A Perfect Match

It seems absolutely perfect to me that this week celebrates both libraries and afterschool professionals. When I think about the people, places, and possibilities that make a difference for young people, afterschool professionals and libraries both hold very special places in my heart.

That Was When I Realized This Could Be a Career

When I was little, I wanted to be a pediatrician who also wrote children’s books. I entered college planning to be a high school English teacher. Those were jobs I saw, could name, and that others had a shared understanding of. Instead, I’ve spent the last 23 years working in a field and in jobs that my husband has generally been unable to describe to others.

Quality x Scale x Speed x Sustainability

I’m excited to share and celebrate a key milestone in the journey of the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) that was launched as a response to President Biden’s call to action in his last State of the Union.

The milestone? Monday’s release of the NPSS Voluntary Quality Standards NPSS Voluntary Quality Standards – a key marker on the path towards ensuring that 250,000 more Americans are playing essential evidence-based, relationship-rich roles in the lives of our young people, who are on their own

Waiting on the Workplace to Change

This week we’re bringing you a special guest Round Up from our Program Assistant & Operations Coordinator Yazmeen Mayes. Last week I listened to a webinar from Education Reimagined, where they invited Olivia Christensen, a former student of Iowa Big and now a board member at Education Reimagined, on a panel. Olivia discussed how intimidating the workplace seemed, and how a candidate’s presentation alone can determine their likelihood for a job. It took me back to my interview for KP Catalysts.

Weekly Remix Round Up – 7/18

Title: “Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988” – This remix includes the mention of suicide. If you or someone you know is suicidal, you can reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.

I was a 16-year-old high school senior the first time I made a suicide plan. I immediately drove to my mom’s office to tell her, and she took me to my therapist. I was lucky to already have a therapist and to have a parent who worked in, and therefore knew how to navigate, the medical field. That same year, I called a suicide hotline for a friend. I remember pulling out the white pages to look up the number.

Weekly Remix Round Up – 7/11

Last Tuesday’s launch from the White House of the National Partnership for Student Success was an energizing kick-off to the work ahead! NPSS has brought a collaboration of partnerships amongst “school districts, non-profit partners, and institutions of higher education to recruit, train, place, and support screened adults in critical high impact roles such as tutors, mentors, student success coaches, and more.” It was incredibly powerful to hear a shared message from public and private learning and development leaders that to support young people to achieve success we must focus on their needs holistically, not just as students.

Advocating for the Space Teens Deserve

Let’s continue our journey through Portland, ME with co-host Margarida Celestino. In this episode’s conversation, Teen Librarian Kelley Blue, Margarida and our Executive Producer Katherine Plog Martinez explore the role of the Portland Public Library’s Teen Library in helping local teens to thrive.
